Today is the day.
July 6th was a Monday. It was my first day of work in the communications office. I took a trip to the Mercy Ships Hospitality Center. There, I first met Anicette.
She was only a few months old and obviously malnourished. She was participating in the baby feeding program, in hopes she's gain enough weight to receive surgery in September.
However, Anicette wasn't gaining weight. Later that month, she was brought to the ward for closer observation. Eventually, she went back to the hospital. However, she didn't gain weight, and missed her September surgery date.
Fortunately, a pediatric dietitian, Kelly, came to the ship. She works in HR but was consulted by the hospital to see Anicette. Kelly was able to contact her hospital back home and have special formula sent to the Africa Mercy for Anicette. Miraculously, it arrived on the ship within weeks. After getting the formula, Anicette finally began gaining weight. As you can see in the photo, she has turned into a robust, healthy little girl.
Her mother, who at first was distant towards her, has blossomed. She is affectionate and quite in love with her baby.
And today, Anicette is finally having her surgery.
